Artenol Magazine

Commercially printed magazine; 7 editions

A COLLABORATIVE PROJECT with Alex Melamid, Artenol was a quarterly publication intended to be a “cure for what ails art.” Taking its name from the analgesic Tylenol and published by Healing Arts Ministry, the magazine featured articles by authors such as Francine Prose, Ian Frazier, Michael Ratner, Gary Indiana, Lawrence Weschler, Rowling Dord and Zinovy Zinik. The New York Times called Artenol “a cross between the New Republic and Mad Magazine,” and both the Library Journal and Stack called it one of the best new magazines of 2015. With its unusual die-cut shape, the magazine easily stood out from other art periodicals. Its satirical, irreverent attitude also set it apart. Though the magazine folded after several years of publication, I was fortunate to be Artenol’s art director, editor, production manager and occasional contributor. Articles by Rowling Dord were written by me. (“Dord” is the only non-word to ever appear in Oxford English Dictionary. It was a typo on what was supposed to read as “D. or d.,” an abbreviation for a chemical term. It seemed a perfect surname for a writer who didn’t exist.)
