Philosopher
2001 | Epoxy, wax; 10 x 7 x 4 ins.; collection of the Malcolm Brown Estate
THIS SCULPTED and cast prototype shows the Greek mathematician and philosopher Theaetetus contemplating a mask of Plato. It was a commissioned by noted Greek philosophy authority Malcolm Brown. Typical of my commercial work at the time, the piece was sculpted in plasticine and then cast and finished in epoxy. The mask is configured to fit over Theaetetus’s face, thus implying that the student is the teacher’s successor. The scroll displays in ancient Greek some of his more controversial writings. This is the original cast. The final piece was patinaed in grays.
