The True Nature of Art

1994 | Commercial Crucifix, can opener, box, paper; 7 x 9 x 2 ins.

THIS IS ONE of the last pieces I made while involved with the School of Bayonne. The duality of art is characterized by a “nervous” object – a combination Crucifix/bottle opener. I believe that Kierkegaard’s revelation concerning a state of simultaneous “belief/disbelief” also applies to art, as represented here by combining mutually exclusive functions – the spiritual and the utilitarian – in a single object. Similarly, art combines the rational and irrational in a single nervous endeavor.
