THE CLOCK IS a multimedia piece that includes a working wooden clock that is its centerpiece, with twelve "hours" illustrated by stories in magazines, books and other media that hang in twelve frames like "pictures" on the wall, seen below. The clock has two sets of hands that run in opposite directions, representing the end of time, culminating in a state of pure existence. The half-life-size figures, based on Rodin maquettes, represent Adam and Eve at the beginning of time. The drive weight is the apple from the Garden of Eden's Tree of Knowledge. The accompanying stories move through time, beginning in the early part of the last century and culminating in the present day. Though they all concern different characters, they are essentially a life narrative of one universal protagonist who moves inexorably toward the existential terminus. They can be accessed by QR codes so that viewers can read them on their phones if they care to. The Clock was inspired in part by illustrator and author Howard Pyle's 1887 book of tales titled "The Wonder Clock." It also takes inspiration from a wooden tall clock my great grandfather built in the 1890s. The piece’s stories can be accessed here.
