THE RED PLANET is a multimedia artwork that incorporates sculpted pieces with text to tell a futurist story about the development of non-human consciousness and its impact on humankind. Taking inspiration from the rapid development of artificial intelligence and the expected emergence within the decade of fully generative artificial intelligence, The Red Planet is planned as a narrative in a unique form that speculates about a possible outcome resulting from these extraordinary – and frightening – cognitive innovations. It deals, as much of my recent work does, with the human capacity to embody both rational and irrational constructs, our unique contribution to the universal motion that constitutes the evolution of God. The shapes above can be assembled to form a Golden Cube, a key element in the drama that unfolds in The Red Planet. Below, a “cube toss” resulting in an arrangement unique to the tosser that acts as a codex for that individual’s personal data uploaded to the AI neural network. Also, the print version of The Red Planet and several graphics from the text. The work is expected to be complete by 2026.
