Transpector

1984 | Wood, printed paper, glass plates, hinges cassette tape; box, 6 x 6 x 5 ins. An edition of 5.

THE TRANSPECTOR is a tool for developing shared meaning between users through a series word/picture exchanges. Consisting of duplicate sets of seven glass slates etched with simple words above writing spaces and a pair of “picture cards,” the Transpector allows users to work out how they perceive the same thought. Users can then refine their disparate conceptions into a single understanding, thus overcoming the relative nature of consciousness. Accompanying the piece is an audio tape of a lecture I gave to a group of students explaining how the piece works.
